Wimbledon will follow the US and Aussie Opens in employing video review systems.
Video review systems are set to arrive at Wimbledon this year.
Players are granted the ability to question certain calls from the chair umpire, following the protocol already in place at both the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.
The new system will be operational on the main stadium and the number one court for the duration of the tournament and on the other four show courts when they are hosting singles matches.
This move comes just a year after the All England Club rolled out electronic line calling, which terminated the centuries-old role of line judges.
Reviewable Decisions
Players will not be permitted to challenge the call of the ELC system, but they can request the umpire to re-examine other decisions, such as:
- If a ball has bounced twice.
- Whether a ball touched an rival's racket or body during play.
- Possible interference at the conclusion of a point.
Importantly, there will be no cap on the number of reviews a competitor can request.
Case in Point
A recent example occurred in Indian Wells last week, where a top player initiated the review system against his opponent.
Draper conceded it was a difficult call for the official, but believed his rival had "used the regulations quite well."
Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a video and ruled Draper was guilty of hindrance, awarding the rally to his opponent.
Wider Implementation
This technology aren't exclusive to major tournaments. It has been in use at the US Open for two years and the Aussie Open this year.
Furthermore, it is becoming more common on the women’s WTA Tour, and by the coming year the men's ATP Tour will have the system in place at all of its events.
Further Updates
Another innovation at The Championships 2025 will be the introduction of graphical cues on scoreboards to complement the verbal announcements from the ELC system.
This addresses situations where the crowd have sometimes been unsure whether a shot was out or in.
In other news, with precisely 100 days remaining until the start of the tournament, the AELTC have also revealed an increase in daily attendance at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
